Six solid cedar doors for Savary Island Resort—built to swing smooth and weather hard.
The Challenge
The resort needed a series of doors that could handle island conditions: salt air, humidity swings, and constant use. They wanted the warmth of solid wood without the maintenance headaches that usually come with it. Rail-and-stile construction was specified, but the joinery needed to survive seasonal wood movement.
The Approach
Designed and built six doors using solid Western Red Cedar—naturally rot-resistant and dimensionally stable enough for the application. Traditional rail-and-stile construction with floating panels that allow for wood movement without cracking. All joints pinned, all hardware marine-grade.
Managed the project from design through installation, including coordinating with the resort's maintenance schedule for minimal disruption.
Outcome
The doors have weathered beautifully. Cedar develops a silver patina over time, which the client embraced rather than fighting with stains or sealers. The swinging hardware operates smoothly, and the proportions suit the resort's rustic aesthetic.
